The participating scientists mainly conduct research in basic science, but without ignoring their possible applications. They focus on high-level research (in accordance with internationally recognized standards) in Probability and Stochastic Processes, Decision Theory and Statistical Inference, Physics of Condensed Matter, Quantum Chemistry, Statistical and Nonlinear Physics, Fluid Mechanics and Electronics. Examples of research we develop include the study of complex systems, granular media, physical properties of colloidal fluids, study of the quantum behavior of molecules and processes, solution of the Navier-Stokes equations, branching processes applied to genetics, epidemiology and population dynamics and pattern recognition applied to image analysis.
The Institute is composed of about 30 researchers (most of them doctors) in the fields of physics, mathematics, chemistry and engineering, divided into 10 groups, 11 areas of knowledge, seven departments and five centers in the four campuses of the UEx.
